Homeschooling is great to bond with your child, and give them the
experiences that you want them to experience while children. You can
teach them your values and not have they learned values from someone
else’s point of view. One of the other great benefits of homeschooling
is that you can also go on many field trips and have them get hands on
experience.
Why are taking many field trips better for children to learn? Well if
you think back on your childhood, what days do you remember better? Was
it the days when you took a field trip in school or days where you sat
at the desk and read out of a book? Like most of us, we remember days
when we went on field trips, or took family trips. Your children will
too.
How to get the most learning experience out of a field trip? Before
going on a field trip you will want to give a few lessons about things
that they will see or experiences that they will have. If you are going
to a historical place have them research about what happened there many
years ago, then when they get to the place they will understand more
about why it’s a special place.
When going on a field trip with your children, you will want to give
them notebooks to jot down notes, or papers that you have wrote out
questions on so that they can answer them while they are there. Give
them a cheap digital camera so that they can take photos of things that
they see there. Once you get back home you can reinforce the lessons
about the place you went to, have them print off some of the photos that
they took and have them make a little memory book about the adventure
so that they can remember it years from the adventure.
Homeschooling field trips are a great way to enjoy things with your
children and make it a learning experience. Your children will benefit
from spending time with you and learning at the same time. They will
learn better and retain what they have learned when they experience it
hands on.
When homeschooling always take as many field trips as you can and start
creating learning memories as a family this is one part of homeschooling
that you will not want to miss out on, the field trips are the best
part of learning.
by: Jodi Forschmiedt Back in the day, writing a report for school meant cracking open the
stiff pages of the encyclopedia, finding your topic, and rewriting the
entry “in your own words.”
Those days are long gone.
Nowadays, kids do their research by opening a laptop and googling.
Search engines turn up hundreds of sites related to every subject. Sure,
the wealth of information can make for a detailed and thorough report.
But your child might spend several frustrating hours wading through the
links, only to find most of them useless. The sites might be written for
adults and too hard to understand. They may mention the subject only
briefly and give no information about it. Worse, many sites offer info
that is biased, politicized, or outright wrong.
You can assist your child by bookmarking high quality, trustworthy
websites that offer accurate information in a style and format that is
appropriate for children and young teens. Here are some great places to
begin any school report—all free.
Social Studies/History
Kidipede
www.historyforkids.org
Though aimed at middle school kids, the entries on Kidipede are easy to
read and would work for younger kids as well. A history professor, who
developed the site specifically to give kids a place to research their
reports, writes all of the content. Searchable by time, place, and
subject, Kidipede is the go-to site for history projects, and also
offers lots of entries on science topics—often up-to-the-minute info
drawn from the news.
BBC
www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryhistory
The venerable BBC offers a fun site for kids with brief entries on many
topics. Pictures and video make it a multi-media experience.
America’s Story
www.americaslibrary.gov
The Library of Congress gives American history center stage with a site
for elementary and middle school kids. Entries are organized by people,
time period, and state, with plenty of cross-links to explore.
Kids.gov
www.kids.gov
Tagged “the official kids’ portal for the U.S. government,” Kids.gov
lets your child go straight to the source for civics reports. A
directory links to the kids’ sections of many other government sites,
like the White House, the U.S Mint, the F.B.I., and many more. Students
from elementary through high school will find useful info here.
Science
How Stuff Works
www.howstuffworks.com
Great for older kids and teens, How Stuff Works contains a vast
storehouse of articles on topics ranging from auto maintenance to why
feet stink and many points between and beyond. This award-winning site
started as the brainchild of Professor Marshall Brain. Now owned by
Discovery Communications, How Stuff Works is adding new topics
continuously.
Eurekalert
www.eurekalert.org/kidsnews
The American Association for the Advancement of Science runs this
science news service. The site gathers interesting science news from
around the world and provides summaries and links. It’s great for older
kids and teens looking for current events in science.
Encyclopedia of Life
www.eol.org
Every life form you can think of has an entry on this huge site. As on
Wikipedia, members of the public can contribute articles to the
Encyclopedia of Life. But professional curators authenticate each one,
so the information can be trusted.
All subjects
Yahoo Kids
www.kids.yahoo.com
If your kids need to do a web search, Yahoo Kids offers a safe search
engine that only returns sites that are appropriate for children.
Multnomah County Library
www.multcolib.org/homework/index.html
Terrific list of websites to help kids with homework in any area. Be
sure and check out the “evaluating websites” page. It lists clues that
parents and students can use to figure out whether a website is a good
and trustworthy source of information.
No discussion of internet resources for kids would be complete without a
mention of parental control software to keep kids from stumbling into
adults-only material. You can find reviews of the most popular products
here: www.internet-filter-review.toptenreviews.com.
One other resource your kids should know about: the local public
library. Librarians are standing by, waiting to help beleaguered
students with their school reports. Happy researching!
by:Amy twain When you watch TV, read newspapers, hear the radio, or even browse the
Net, what do you notice aside from the shows, programs or favorite news
you typically frequent?
Yes, advertisement everywhere. And quite ironically, advertisers are
also wise enough to broadcast to their consumers and the wide-eyed
impressionable public that we do need stuff and a lot of stuff just to
be happy.
Yeah, right.
It's like them telling to our faces that we are incomplete if we don't
buy the latest cellphone model, we'll be left out if we don't have the
latest gadget, we'll look unkempt if we don't have the latest makeup
collection/grooming things/toiletries if we don't have "that" latest
item from the collection of that famous actress/starlet/designer. That
we stink like hell if we don't douse ourselves with that latest perfume
this and that actress supposedly use (hmmm...she was only paid to
promote that product actually for a length of contract. The advertisers
sure know how to do their work--actually making us foolish to think that
the celebrity really use that brand or thing everyday, as if).
But well, the advertisers are merely doing their jobs anyway and they're
sure paid that much into promoting to their target markets just as long
as they make the sale.
Anyway, the point is, these people are trying to point at our
weakness--which is trying to fill in some places in us that supposedly
"we need their stuff" to be happy.
But let me tell that ironically, you don't need a lot of things to be
happy. If you want to be happy, then I'm sure we can augment our
happiness levels with our relationships and deeper connections with the
people who matter in our lives. Significant others, family, friends,
neighbors, colleagues and loved ones will make our stay here on our
earthly lives more meaningful and memorable than purchasing that latest
shoes. Though I admit that acquiring some possessions indeed may provide
that quick-fix to be happy, however, time well spent and investing
experiences with loved ones or even with yourself--that may I say, is
sure unforgettable and more fulfilling.
Solar Panel Installation - A Career With A Bright Future http://www.solar-energy.co.uk/images/solar-panels-roof.jpg by: William Hauselberg
Why Pursue a Career in Solar Panel Installation?
In today’s world, more and more people are interested in protecting the
environment, and conserving less energy. Thus, many choose to install
solar paneling, as this equipment allows them to use the energy the sun
generates as a source of electricity for their homes and businesses.
Since this field is so rapidly growing, and jobs are abundant; pursuing
solar training is a great choice for someone looking for a long term
career.
Who Employs Solar Panel Installers?
There are many solar panel installation companies who are always looking
for qualified solar panel installers. Such companies often look for
employees with some experience in the field, as well as some type of
training. Experience in electrical work is a plus as well. General
experience on construction sites is also desirable. Private home and
business owners may also hire professional solar panel installers
directly.
What is Involved in Solar Panel Installation Training?
There are currently many solar education programs available that teach
students about solar power technology, and how to install solar power
systems. Other topics often include solar application engineering and
instructions on how to use solar power equipment. Some training programs
offer short classes where the students can receive hands-on training
from professionals on how to install solar equipment. There are even
free online classes that offer training on solar panel installation. To
read more about available training courses, please visit:
www.aeesolar.com/solar-training.html
How Long does Solar Training Last?
Solar education vary as to length. Most classes are only about 5 to 6
days in length. After taking such training courses, many become
certified to perform Solar installation work. The North American Board
of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) has a certification program
available, where by passing a number of tests, one can receive a
certification as a PV installer. This certification will set them apart
from the competition as being competent solar panel installers. Thus,
customers can have more confidence in the installer who is performing
such work in their homes or businesses.
